Mihaela van der Schaar to give tutorial at MLSS 2020

Mihaela van der Schaar will deliver a tutorial at the 2020 Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS) to be hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems from June 28 through July 10.

Mihaela will present her tutorial, entitled “Machine Learning for Healthcare” on July 8 and July 9. In her talk, she will explore the challenges and unique opportunities that come with creating a new field of study in which the traditional machine learning techniques and models cannot be applied. She will also provide an introduction to some creative approaches the van der Schaar Lab has taken to addressing these challenges.

The MLSS event series was started in 2002 to promote modern methods of statistical machine learning and inference. It was motivated by the observation that, while many students are keen to learn about machine learning, and an increasing number of researchers want to apply machine learning methods to their research problems, few machine learning courses are taught at universities. MLSS events focus on topics that are at the core of modern machine learning, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art practice.

Mihaela will be one of 17 expert speakers at the event, which this year will be held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

All presentations from the event will be made publicly available on Youtube.

Other upcoming tutorials by Mihaela van der Schaar

Mihaela will be delivering a tutorial at the 2020 International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), along with keynote presentations in 2 different workshops, as mentioned previously here. ICML will be held from July 12 through 18.

She will also be presenting 3 lectures at the 3rd Advanced Course on Data Science & Machine Learning (ACDL2020) from July 13 through 17.

From August 17 through 25, Mihaela will be a speaker at the Oxford Machine Learning Summer School 2020 (OxML.2020).

Nick oversees the van der Schaar Lab’s communications, including media relations, content creation, and maintenance of the lab’s online presence.

Nick studied Japanese (BA Hons.) at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2012. Nick previously worked in HQ communications roles at Toyota (2013-2016) and Nissan (2016-2020).

Given his humanities/languages background and experience in communications, Nick is well-positioned to highlight and explain the real-world impact of research that can often be quite esoteric. Thankfully, he is comfortable asking almost endless questions in order to understand a topic.
